Mental Health Therapist

I am a psychotherapist who specializes in helping people with life stressors, trauma, anxiety, and depression. I knew early on that I wanted to work in a field where I could help people. My path to becoming a therapist was a bit winded though and I was exploring photography and other professions in-between my university degrees. Originally from Germany, I had to first learn to master the English language when I landed in the states over 12 years ago. Living as a first generation immigrant in the US has come with many opportunities but also challenges. I think this experience has helped me to connect well with people who also might struggle with feeling out of place at times. My work is greatly influenced by complex trauma experts and attachment theory. I like to help people make sense of their life experiences and how those have shaped them into the people they are today. With stressful life experiences often come certain trigger responses and difficulty managing emotions (such as sadness, anger, hopelessness). I believe that exploring those difficulties and gaining a greater understanding about our internal worlds is key in learning how to cope and manage current life stressors and emotions. My style is client-centered, meaning that I put great emphasis on really getting to know my client and learning about their story, so that we can work together on reaching their goals in treatment. My favorite time in therapy is when clients report back to me that the intensity of their trigger responses has decreased. The smile on their faces, the relief, and joy when they see improvements is what ignites my passion for therapy all over again.

Professional Expertise

I utilize collaborative problem solving to help client's figure out their goals for therapy. Narrative therapy techniques are incorporated in supporting individuals to explore their stories. Furthermore I use Motivational Interviewing (MI) to explore resistance and prepare for change. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) techniques are used and taught in order to facilitate coping skills and mindfulness.

I use the Gottman Couples Therapy Method to help couples overcome challenges in their relationships. Meaning, I help couples identify destructive communication patterns and guide them in implementing new ways to connect with each other. Pre-marriage counseling is provided to couples who are thinking about taking the next step in their relationship.

I'm a Christian, but I respect people of all faiths and if requested can incorporate matters of faith in our work together.

Accelerated Resolution Therapy

From the Art International website: "ART incorporates a combination of techniques used in many other traditional psychotherapies. ART works directly to reprogram the way in which distressing memories and images are stored in the brain so that they no longer trigger strong physical and emotional reactions. ART accomplishes this through the use of rapid eye movements similar to eye movements that occur during dreaming. Although techniques similar to these are used in other types of therapies. ART’s very specific and directive approach can achieve rapid recovery from symptoms and reactions that may have been present for many years."

DBT - Dialectical Behavioral Therapy

DBT was created for people with Borderline Personality Disorder to help teach them coping skills such as mindfulness, interpersonal effectiveness, emotion regulation, and distress tolerance. Today this method is widely used to help all kinds of different populations to decrease anxious and depressive symptoms, as well as self-harming behaviors.

Psychodynamic Therapy

Psychodynamic therapy focuses on unconscious processes that can manifested in a person’s behavior. The goal of psychodynamic therapy is to enhance a client’s self-awareness and understanding of the influence of their past on their present behavior. Psychodynamic therapy aids the client in examining unresolved conflicts and symptoms that arise from past dysfunctional relationships and traumatic experiences.

Attachment Based Theory

Attachment focused means assessing and exploring the client’s attachment style to their caregivers during childhood and todays romantic relationships and friendships. There are different attachment styles: dismissive, fearful, secure, and preoccupied. Understanding one’s attachment style can help in identifying struggles in relationships and provide more insight.
